Al-Hajjaj Ibn Yusuf is ashamed when the soldiers of Abd Allah Ibn Al-Zubayr attack him, and he decides to abandon his career as a teacher. He then joins the army of caliph Abd Al-Malik Ibn Marwan.
Abd Al-Malik Ibn Marwan beheads Amr Ibn Sa'id Ibn Al-'As, and to offset the people's fury regarding the incident, the caliph pays them financial givings. As soon as Al-Hajjaj Ibn Yusuf arrives in the city, he is caught by the military forces.
When Al-Hajjaj eventually manages to meet caliph Abd Al-Malik Ibn Marwan, he earns his trust.
The caliph laments the slackening of the army of Abu Zur'a Rawh Ibn Zinba', and Al-Hajjaj makes use of it. Abd Allah Ibn Al-Zubayr tries to keep the looming danger of the Khawarij (the Exchangers) at bay.
The caliph decides to bribe Abd Allah Ibn Al-Zubayr's loyalists into overthrowing him, and the Khawarij start making their headway for war. Abd Al-Malik sends a messenger to the Caesar of Rome.
The Khawarij arrive at the borders of Basrah, and Al-Hajjaj turns down Abd Al-Malik's suggestion to assign him to rule a state, and he asks to go to war against Mus'ab Ibn Al-Zubayr.
Abd Al-Malik decides to head with his army towards Iraq, and Basrah is evacuated in order to besiege the Khawrij when they reach the city.
The conflict between the Khawarij and the loyalist to Abd Allah Ibn Al-Zubayr resumes as Al-Hajjaj beheads Mos'ab and sends his head to his brother. Al-Hajjaj then tries to unite the people of Kufa to swear allegiance to Abd Al-Malik.
As Abd Al-Malik approaches Ibn Al-Zubayr, the latter's mother grows concerned that Abd Al-Malik might storm Mecca. Ibn Al-Zubayr attempts to reinforce the foundations of the Kaaba.
Quiet to everyone’s shock, Abd Al-Malik assigns Al-Hajjaj to lead the army heading to Hijaz, and he devises a plan to wipe the Khawarij off the map.
The workers resumes strengthening the foundations of the Kaaba and Ibn A-Zubayr urges the people to defend and protect it against any possible threats the Umayyads might intend.
Al-Hajjaj approaches Mecca, and Ibn Al-Zubayr gathers his men to renew their allegiance to him against Abd Al-Malik. Al-Hajjaj's father tries to convince him to keep the army and the conflict outside of Hijaz.
Abd Al-Malik considers the Arabization of the diwans (ministries) as per Al-Hajjaj's advice. The Dome of the Rock is built. Ibn Al-Zubayr's soldiers fight fiercely against Al-Hajjaj's, which urges Al-Hajjaj to consider a more laborious plot to debilitate Ibn Al-Zubayr's army.
Al-Hajjaj's father allies with Ibn Al-Zubayr, and Al-Hajjaj orders for a new catapult to be built besides the one in progress.
Al-Hajjaj's army wages another attack and raids Mecca as they take control over the Maymon Well, leaving the city to suffer water outage.
Al-Hajjaj's army sets their tents next to the Maymon Well as the catapult is placed somewhere safe. In a clear manifestation of their initial triumph, they set fire around the place to make sure the people of Mecca witness their presence and foresee their victory.
As one of Al-Hajjaj's men turns traitor, Al-Hajjaj has him severely punished. They lay an unassailable siege around Mecca. Abd Al-Malik decides to Arabize the currency.
As the siege resumes and tightens, Ibn Al-Zubayr tries to speak courage and enthusiasm into the hearts of his dispirited men, encouraging them to defend Mecca against any possible attack waged by Al-Hajjaj.
Abd Al-Malik makes it clear that Ibn Al-Zubayr can only choose between surrender or death. Al-Hajjaj fires his catapults, and Ibn Al-Zubayr's followers forsake him.
Heavy-hearted that his men and sons have abandoned him, Ibn Al-Zubayr locks himself in the Great Mosque of Mecca, while Abd Al-Malik is enraged about the unholy transgression that has befallen Mecca and the Kaaba.
Abd Allah Ibn Al-Zubayr and Al-Hajjaj's father are murdered. Al-Hajjaj has Ibn Al-Zubayr's body crucified to warn the people of Mecca against following his conduct.
Al-Hajjaj doesn't un-crucify Ibn Al-Zubayr's body until Asma' Bint Abi Bakr begs him to. He starts looking into the situation of Sakinah bint Husayn, and Abd Al-Malik gives orders for the body to be uncrucified.
Asma' Bint Abi Bakr dies. Al-Hallaj and Ibn Amr meet with Sakinah as Ibn Amr asks to be pardoned. Sakinah challenges Al-Hajjaj. Abd Al-Malak visits Mecca to perform pilgrimage.
Abd Al-Malik communicates to Al-Hajjaj that the people of Mecca are complaining from him. Al-Hallaj asks for Ibn Amr to be banished from the city. Al-Hallaj leaves Mecca and rules over Kufa.
Al-Hajjaj leaves Kufa for Basrah and asks Al-Muhallab to show him the new weapons to be used against the enemies.
As Al-Hajjaj delivers a message to Qatari Ibn Al-Fuja'a, the head of the Khawarij, to urge him to surrender, Qatari gets infuriated. Al-Hajjaj manages to end the strife in Iraq. Ibn Al-Jaroud is dead.
Simultaneously with the arrival of the Khawarij, Al-Hajjaj and Ghazala have a duel with swords and Ghazala receives a deadly arrow. The Khawarij leave Kufa and Al-Hajjaj's soldiers track them down.
Abd Al-Malik extends Al-Hajjaj's ruling to include more states. Al-Hallak decides to marry Hind Bint Al-Muhallab.
Al-Hajjaj builds a new city to be Hind's dowry and serves as a seat of the ruling. He establishes a strong army and gives it the name "The Army of the Peacocks."
Al-Muhallab gets severely ill and his daughter Hind gets increasingly worried about him. The tension and dispute between Al-Hajjaj and Hind build up. Al-Hajjaj gets preoccupied with his war against Abd Al-Rahman Ibn Muhammad Ibn Al-Ash'ath
Abd Al-Malik sends reinforcements to Al-Hajjaj and sends him to Dayr Al-Jamajim (The Monastery of Skulls) where he fights a fierce battle. Al-Muhallab passes away.
Ibn Al-Ash'ath is beheaded. Abd Al-Malik falls ill and shortly dies. Ibn al-Walid succeeds Abd Al-Malik and considers choosing his son as an heir to the throne instead of his brother Soliman.
Al-Hajjaj takes Rabab to the palace where he tries to drag her into leaking information about her brother and Yazid Ibn Al-Muhallab. Hind learns that Al-Hajjaj has her brother Yazid as a prisoner.
Al-Hajjaj gets infuriated when a rumour claiming he's dead circulates. Hind helps smuggle her brother Yazid out of prison and then returns to her hometown.
Al-Hajjaj rejoices when Ibn Jubayr is arrested. As years pass by, Al-Hajjaj grows feeble, and the strength and tyranny he adopted in the past slacken.
