After his release from prison, Elewa sees an interview with the engineer, Ahmed Shokry, and mistakes him for his fellow inmate Abbas. Ahmed Shokry commemorates the anniversary of meeting his wife and sends her flowers.
As Elewa talks to Ahmed as if he is Abbas, Ahmed loses his temper and kicks him out of his house. However, as Ahmed sets up a meeting to bargain with Elewa, the latter promises not to tell anyone that Ahmed Shokry is actually the ex-con Abbas. Ahmed records his meeting with Elewa and calls the police.
When Elewa recounts Ahmed's story to the journalist Sherine, the latter informs her editor-in-chief and starts pursuing the story, visiting the warden of the prison where Abbas was imprisoned to get more information in an attempt to tie Ahmed Shokry to Abbas.
Elewa tells Sherine and her editor-in-chief about how Abbas deliberately cut off his finger so that he could break out of the prison hospital. Sherine looks into Ahmed Shokry's history and matches his fingerprints to Abbas's.
As Ahmed Shokry enters a clothes store to look for his wife, the store's owner shocks him when she claims that he is Ibrahim, the father of her daughter. Sherine and her editor-in-chief agree to publish the information they have that proves that Ahmed Shokry is the fugitive Abbas.
The newspaper's crew report Ahmed Shokry to the attorney general, accusing him of forgery and fraud; however, the charges remain unofficial. Ahmed sues the newspaper for defamation, naming the editor-in-chief and Sherine as defendants.
As the trial commences, the newspaper's lawyer summons Hanaa, Ahmed Shokry's wife, and Aziza, a member of the board of Ahmed's company as witnesses. When Aziza appears in court, the newspaper's lawyer pulls out all the stops to get her to misspeak.
When Sherine Lotfy survives an assassination attempt, Ahmed Shokry is accused of being responsible for it. The judge questions Elewa about his relationship with Abbas.
When the owner of the clothes store is summoned to court, she shows up with her daughter to be questioned by both the newspaper's lawyer and Ahmed's lawyer. The prosecution summons Ahmed Shokry and accuses him of trying to have Sherine killed.
As the judge questions Ahmed's driver, the latter reveals that his car broke down when Ahmed was on his way to Switzerland, prompting Ahmed to get another taxi and go to his village. When the court questions Hanaa, she reveals that the defendant is not her husband, Ahmed Shokry.
As Sherine looks into the case, evidence reveals that Ahmed Shokry and Abbas are twins. Ahmed tells the prosecution that he has a twin brother called Abbas. Ahmed is detained until a verdict is reached.
As Ahmed's lawyer files an appeal, the court orders Ahmed to be released. Sherine's investigation reveals that Ahmed is innocent of all charges.
As Elewa meets Aziza and proposes to her, she rebuffs him. The court questions Ahmed's secretary who reveals that Aziza burned a copy of someone's criminal records as she plotted against Ahmed with someone on the phone.
The coroner reveals to Sherine that the body that they found belongs to Abbas, not Ahmed Shokry. As Ahmed talks to Aziza, she tells him that he killed his brother Abbas.
In court, Ahmed recounts how his brother took him to an empty building and fell off the building. But as he regained his balance, Ahmed saw someone push him off the building. Hassan confesses to Ahmed that Aziza got him to forge the criminal record that was used in court.
