Afra finds a baby boy next to the mosque. He raises him with his barren wife and names him Ashour. He takes care of him until he grows up and becomes a strong man. Qanswa, the clan chief, proposes that he work with him, but he refuses, and Afra dies.
Afra's widow leaves the house after his death, and Darwish quarrels with Ashour and kicks him out of the house. The latter wanders the streets looking for a place to sleep, and Qanswa insists on kicking him out of the neighborhood, so Zein proposes that he work with him.
Ashour marries Zainab. Qanswa fights Zein and insists on taking the levy from him, but Ashour confronts him, beats his men, and refuses to pay the levy.
Ashour is blessed with three children, and the merchant Ahmed proposes that he work with him. Qanswa forces Ahmed to pay a bigger levy, otherwise his goods will be stolen.
Ahmed scolds Ashour for letting Qanswa's men steal his goods. Days pass and Ashour’s children grow up and work with him in his business. His son Hasaballah asks to marry the daughter of the sheikh of the neighborhood, but the latter refuses. Rizkallah meets the dancer Folla.
Zainab turns to Qanswa to search for her son, Rizkallah, who hid in Darwish’s café. Ashour quarrels with the latter and asks him to stay away from his children. Ashour refuses to become the neighborhood’s clan chief after he defeats Qanswa in a quarrel between them.
Ashour's two sons get angry at their father for refusing to be the clan chief of the neighborhood. Ahmed plans with Kulaib to become the neighborhood's clan chief after Qanswa, and Darwish tries to get Folla to trap Ashour.
Folla tries to convince Ashour to accept being the clan chief, and the latter falls for her and decides to marry her. She bears him a child, whom he names Shams.
Cholera spreads in the neighborhood, and Ashour decides to go with his family to the mountain to escape certain death. However, Zainab and her children refuse to accompany him. After a while, he returns with Folla to the neighborhood and finds no one at home.
Ashour discovers that all the residents of the neighborhoods have died due to cholera, and Folla suggests that he stay in one of the abandoned palaces until its owner appears.
Folla attempts to get Ashour to take the jewelry from the palace, as it has no owner. She claims in front of the sheikh of the neighborhood that she and her husband, Ashour, are the owners of the palace. Ashour takes charge of the neighborhood and is taken aback when Darwish returns.
Folla warns Ashour of Darwish's return to the neighborhood, but Ashour tries to agree with Darwish to start over, and the latter betrays him by plotting with the clan chief Dahshan to steal his business.
Ashour defeats Dahshan in public and teaches him a lesson he won't forget. Ashour worries when the government begins to inventory the palaces in order to identify their original owners. Folla asks Mahmoud, the sheikh of the neighborhood, to forge an ownership contract for the palace.
Mahmoud refuses to forge the palace ownership contract, so the police arrest Ashour and remove him from the palace. Darwish tries to confront the new clan chief, Abu Douma, until Ashour is released from prison.
Darwish becomes the neighborhood's clan chief. He seeks to throw Folla in prison to get rid of her and asks Ahmed to kick her out of the neighborhood.
