Safia grows up in the care of her father's cousin, Fawzi Pasha. Fawzi's wife takes care of her and is bothered by Fawzi's deviant behavior. Safia goes frequently to her aunt Bahija's cottage to visit her, and to meet her music teacher. Fawzi announces that he will deprive everyone of his wealth except his next wife, to pressure Safia to marry him. Safia is torn between returning the favor and her love for her music teacher.
