News spreads that attractive Serena van der Woodsen has returned to Manhattan after a mysterious transfer to boarding school, and her best friend Blair finds it difficult to give up her position at the top of their social ladder.

Serena receives a cold reception from Blair, decides to take Dan to a fundraiser thrown by her nemesis Chuck, and Blair realizes she might gain something by allowing Jenny into her inner circle.

Blair discovers a hidden secret about Serena and plans to exploit it to her advantage. Dan is confident that his future lies in the "mentor" job and is shocked when the uninterested Nate lands the job. Meanwhile, Jenny grows close to Serena's younger brother.

Blair is overjoyed when her mother, Eleanor, chooses her to be the new face of her clothing line; Serena and Dan remember that they come from very different worlds; and Nate and Chuck enjoy a weekend away to de-stress.

Dan makes elaborate plans to impress Serena on their first official date. Jenny is invited to Blair's famous slumber party, and Lily discovers Eric has disappeared from his treatment center and seeks help from her ex-boyfriend, Rufus.

Dan's childhood friend Vanessa returns home and declares her feelings for him, putting him in a difficult position. Blair organizes a costume party, and unexpected things happen. At the same time, Jenny and Dan sneak into the party in disguise.

Serena and Dan admit they're in love. Jenny discovers a secret about her parents, and Blair is once again devastated by Nate's actions.

Blair hides her grief for Nate at her seventeenth birthday party. Dan takes Vanessa to the party, hoping she'll connect with Serena, but this backfires and further upsets Serena. Meanwhile, Nate's parents ask him to make a major sacrifice.

Dan discovers that Serena and her family are celebrating Thanksgiving alone, so he naively invites them to spend the holiday with his family, putting them in an awkward situation. Blair panics when she discovers that her father will not return for the holidays.

Serena is forced to go to the annual Cotillion Ball when she learns her grandmother will be there, but some tension arises. Blair agrees to go to the party with Nate, but only as friends, which makes him assume she is dating someone else.

Blair's father returns home for the holidays with an unexpected guest, and Serena enlists Jenny and Vanessa's help in planning the perfect gift for Dan's birthday.

Things go disastrously wrong at an unsanctioned pool party at school. The principal threatens to expel all participants unless the party organizer is revealed. Dan decides to inform on him, causing a rift between him and Serena.

Dan is shocked when rumors spread that Serena was spotted buying a pregnancy test, and he decides to stand by her no matter the cost. Nate is furious when he discovers Blair and Chuck's affair, and Blair's life falls apart when the others find out what happened.

Blair returns to school to find that Serena still doesn't like her. Jenny turns to illegal activities to gain fame, while Blair plots to destroy her. Serena struggles to adjust to living with Chuck.

Serena's life is turned upside down when her ex-girlfriend Georgina Sparks returns to town to stir up trouble. Nate unexpectedly connects with Vanessa, and Jenny develops a crush on a guy she believes may be her path to long-term fame.

Georgina reveals she knows one of Serena's biggest secrets, Blair and Jenny spread scandalous rumors about each other as their power struggle continues, Dan discovers Jenny's new boyfriend is cheating on her, and Rufus asks Lily for advice.

Georgina reveals the real reason behind Serena's escape from Manhattan to boarding school, and Serena quickly falls back into her old habits. She then reveals her secret to her friends, who put aside their differences and try to help her.

With Serena's reputation at risk, Blair takes matters into her own hands to deal with the manipulative Georgina. Lily prepares for her wedding, but as the ceremony begins, an unexpected guest appears. Serena and Dan try to work things out.
