After her husband dies at sea, Celia's mourning is interrupted by her teenage daughter, Vicky, who encourages her to date the newly-arrived gambler, Charlie. As she witnesses her mother's hesitance, Vicky agrees to help Charlie woo her mother if he helps her with her aspirations to be a gambler.
