When the dictator of Cambodia in the 1970s, who is also the head of the so-called Khmer Rouge militia, decides to rid his people (the undesirables), he kills about two million people and turns the nation into a hellscape in the middle of the earth. Sydney, an American journalist, and Dith Pran, his Cambodian assistant and translator, cover this hell, experiencing numerous horrors.
