Ryan Newman is a man down on his luck, who has nothing to live for. As he's about to commit suicide, he's asked to watch his neighbor's dog, Wilfred, and realizes he's the only one who can see him as a real person in a dog suit.
In season 2, Ryan faces the repercussions of Wilfred's absence, so he decides to restore their friendship, but Wilfred's popularity brings with it problems, and puts them facing an unexpected enemy.
Ryan sets off on a journey to find Wilfred's original owner. Meanwhile, Ryan becomes friends with his dog's arch enemy, the mailman. In an attempt to win the girl of his dreams, Ryan takes Wilfred to dog training classes, but things do not go as planned.
A camping trip turns disastrous when Ryan and Wilfred receive an unexpected guest, threatening their safety and raising feelings of tension between them, before Kristen's custody battle causes Ryan and Wilfred to take sides.
