Khaled, the mayor's son, is arrogant because of his family's wealth. He excels in high school, and his father wants him to become a doctor. Awad, a popular young man in the village, also excels and enrolls in medical school, so Khaled insists that Awad work as his servant in Cairo.

Awad accepts a low-paid job and travels for fear of the mayor. Khaled lives opposite a retired employee and his daughter, Faten. He stays up late at cabarets with Sami and gets into a fight, so Awad intervenes to protect him.

The mayor visits Khaled to check on his studies, and Awad hides the fact that he stayed up late. Faten's father falls ill, so she seeks Awad's help.

Khaled wants to marry Faten temporarily, but she and her father refuse. Khaled spends a large sum of money and gets in a relationship with Gamalat. He tries to disgrace her, but Awad saves her. Khaled fails in college.

After failing, Khaled returns to the village, where he attempts to rape a girl, gets drunk, accidentally kills a man, and escapes with Awad. Khaled accuses Awad of stealing a sum of money to justify his actions.

Awad sends monthly sums of money to the victim's family from various cities under a pseudonym and helps his family financially cover his sisters' dowry. He works for Abu Al Maati in Port Said

The mayor discovers Khaled's marriage to the belly dancer Gamalat and dies of grief. Khaled burns the land contracts and tries to disfigure Gamalat with acid. In return for Awad looking after his family, Abu Al Maati offers him a partnership.

Awad's family asks for his return, but he returns after Abu Al Maati's death, marries Faten, and introduces her to his family. Khaled sells his land and his mother's land after stealing her signet.

Khaled is expelled from college and his mother dies after discovering that her land has been sold. He blackmails Awad financially, threatening to expose the murder and trying to convince Faten that Awad is the killer.

Faten gives Khaled her jewelry to get him to leave, but Awad finds out and tells her the truth. Khaled returns to his nightlife once again.

Khaled sells the jewelry to Masoud for a check and reports Awad to the police as a murderer but loses his belongings in a taxi. Gamalat shoots Khaled, killing him, and the prosecution accuses Awad.

The prosecution charges Awad. The driver hands over Khaled's belongings, and Masoud confirms that Gamalat is the killer. Sami admits seeing Khaled kill the man, the case is closed, and Awad is released.
