In 1948, Abed's family was forced by the Israeli occupation authorities to leave one of the villages adjacent to the city of Bethlehem, but Abed swore to return. He converted a cave that was located on his original land into a small house using wood and metal panels. He also opened a café on his land, despite the presence of Israeli settlements around him.
