Despite being bankrupt, Mansour's admiration for Fatma leads him to write her a check for 100 pounds. Kawthar decides to send young Youssef to his grandfather, the Pasha, to ask for money.
When the Pasha asks his son Mahmoud to bring Kawthar money to aid Mansour, Mahmoud insists that he must meet young Youssef in exchange for the money.
Sa'eid Pasha recruits Mansour for a patriotic mission. As Mansour is hired in the ministerial office of Sa'eid Pasha, Kawthar suspects that Mansour and Fatma are having an affair.
Kawthar finds Mansour's things in Fatma's house. Mansour is shocked that his brother's name is included in the list of those about to be ordained as Bey.
When Mahmoud's request to be ordained as Bey is rejected, he suspects that Mansour has interfered to impede him. Fatma asks Mansour to leave Kawthar so that she could marry him. Sa'eid resigns from office.
Mansour is fired due to his relationship with Fatma. Abdel Salam asks Mansour to fix his relationship with Kawthar and Mahmoud. Mansour informs Youssef of his wish to wed Fatma.
As he loses his reputation, his job, and his family, Mansour dies of grief. The Pasha passes away soon after, and Mahmoud steals his will. He seizes Youssef and Kawthar's rightful inheritance and kicks them out of the palace.
As Youssef grows up into a young man, he receives a letter claiming that his mother, Kawthar, is having an affair with Latif. When he confronts her, Kawthar confesses to marrying Latif in secret.
As Youssef flunks out of school, Latif helps him get a job at Dar Al-Maarif.
In 1967, Youssef's wife gives birth to a son. The new father grows worried for his child's future as Egypt is embroiled in war. The Six-Day War follows soon thereafter.
Youssef struggles to raise his son Hasson, who gets bullied at school. Youssef discovers that one of Hassan's classmates is the son of Bassiouny, who has seized his inheritance.
Youssef clashes with Hassan over his bad behavior. Youssef soon comes to learn that Bassiouny passed away after his building collapsed with him inside. Hassan turns to extremisim and terrorism.
