As the guys work the mine, Arem prepares to wed her cousin. Her uncle Menwar refuses to attend her wedding and Al-Taher objects to Arem's marriage. He cuts off Arem and Ibrahim and takes Arem by force.

Al-Taher celebrates his marriage to Arem but she rejects him. As he tries to convince the neighborhood that she is his wife, Arem sneaks out to meet Ibrahim. The mineworkers revolt and demand a raise but the French supervisor promises to make them pay for the chaos they caused.

The workers inform the head of the company of their demands. Ibrahim starts working in the port at Al-Rudayyif. A fight breaks out and someone beats Taher. Ibrahim grows angry when he learns that Taher is still alive. When he goes to see Arem, Taher's sister sees them.

John is angry at the head of the Labor Union. Salem and Morris plot to seize control of the port. John is found dead in his house. The workers split into two groups: one that supports the French occupation and another that supports the Tunisian Labor Union.

The workers try to get close to Ibrahim as Salem tries to convince Al-Taher that Ibrahim is the one who tried to kill him. Arem warns Ibrahim that he is in danger. Morris tries to get close to Janet who rejects him. Salem comes up with a list of candidates for the union.

Arem gives birth. Ibrahim and Al-Taher's reconciliation leaves Mohy Al-Din ill at ease. Morris leaves for the capital. Ibrahim saves the workers who were going into Damousse. When a number of workers die in an explosion, Al-Taher saves Ibrahim from under the rubble.

When Mohy Al-Din's daughter goes to see Ibrahim, she finds Al-Taher taking care of him. Mohy Al-Din asks Ibrahim to wed his daughter and be his partner. Arem is saddened to learn that Ibrahim got married. Al-Taher leaves the money and returns home.

As Janet falls ill, Salem takes her to the hospital. Arem stays for one night after Al-Taher returns home before leaving for her father's house. Morris is saddened when he learns that Janet's kidney is failing.

As Arem goes looking for her brother, she tells Al-Taher that she will never forget that he took her from the person she loves. Al-Rudayyif's workers agree to stand up against the occupation to defend the union. The Sheikh admires Arem after seeing her at the well. Morris is devastated when Janet dies.

The workers go on strike across Al-Rudayyif. The French army attacks various neighborhoods and kills many civilians. The Algerian resistance fighters unite with Mohy Al-Din's men to resist the French occupation. Al-Taher decides to return to the mine.

Arem's son dies in a landmine explosion. Salem joins Mohy Al-Din's cause. The French police kills Mosbah and they search the workers' houses for explosives. The Sheikh tries to get close to Arem but she refuses him.

As Arem runs away from the Sheikh, he tries to find her at her parents' place. The neighborhood thinks that Arem was eaten by a wolf. The French arrest Al-Taher. One of the Algerian resistance fighters finds Arem wandering around and tries to bring her home.

Radwan marries a French woman against his father's wishes. Ibrahim is devastated when Salem tells him that Arem is dead. Francois leaves for France to join the resistance against the Germans. Al-Taher is sentenced to 10 years in prison. Arem goes to France with her rescuer.

As a prisoner is executed, a riot breaks out. Al-Taher escapes prison. Arem joins the resistance fighters on one of their missions. Ibrahim hears that Al-Taher died in prison. Hitler tries to get North Africa to join him against France and Britain.

Arem returns to Tunisia where she meets her grown up son. The resistance fighters and Mohy Al-Din agree on a plan to attack the French camp. Arem kills the Sheikh as the people revolt after Mohy Al-Din's public execution.
