Despite evidence that the reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant has exploded, the leading engineers downplay the incident and refuse to evacuate the nearby town. Plant workers and firefighters unknowingly receive fatal doses of radiation as they try to prevent a looming catastrophe.

When a spike in radiation levels is detected in Minsk, the authorities dismiss Ulana Khomyuk's warnings of an impending disaster. Valery Legasov fights against bureaucrats to prove that they are facing a nuclear disaster.

A nuclear meltdown threatens to contaminate the groundwater, and Valery devises a plan to keep the consequences at bay. Lyudmilla visits Vasily and defies instructions of not having prolonged contact with him. The episode ends with Lyudmilla watching Vasily's body sealed in lead and buried.

As a wide exclusion zone is set up, liquidators are recruited to clean up radioactive debris from the reactor's roof. When Ulana's investigation uncovers a lethal coverup of a defect in the reactor core that caused the explosion, she urges Legasov to reveal it to the International Atomic Energy Agency

Legasov lies to the IAEA about what happened but later reveals the suppressed information about the Leningrad plant that reveals a design flaw in the reactor's core. Valery, Boris, and Ulana risk their own safety in order to have the truth revealed and the perpetrators punished.
