After having joined forces with Alfred against the Danes, forcing them out of Wessex, the valiant warrior Uhtred sets out to retrieve his lost lands. But as Guthred gets kidnapped, Uhtred and his aides attempt to save him.

As Uhtred saves Guthred a second time, the latter expresses his gratitude, yet he soon turns against his savior after the malicious Eadred incites him against Uhtred, who has grown fond of Gisela, Guthred's sister.

After Guthred betrays Uhtred and hands him over to his foes, Uhtred ends up as a slave on a Viking ship. When Guthred offers to wed his sister Gisela to Aelfric, she refuses, since she's in love with Uhtred, whom Hild and Ragnar set out to rescue at Alfred's behest.

Reunited with Gisela, Uhtred heads north to put an end to the attacks of Sigefrid and Erik. Uhtred crosses paths with Guthred, whom he confronts about selling him out. Ragnar and Kjartan face off.

Three years after the battle of Dunholm, Aethelwold tells Uhtred of a vision that foretells his accession to the throne of England. Erik returns and makes Uhtred a disconcerting offer. Seeking to form a new alliance, Alfred plans to wed his daughter Aethelflaed to lord Aethelred of Mercia.

Following the wedding of Aethelflaed and the sly Aethelred, the latter causes the rift between Alfred and Uhtred to grow. Soon, the kingdom is confronted by the grim face of war, and Uhtred and Aethelred go to battle with the army of Erik and Sigefrid, who may have a few tricks up their sleeves.

With the Saxons away from their camp, the Danes attack it, taking Aethelflaed as a hostage and leaving only a few survivors behind. An enraged Alfred sends Aethelred along with Uhtred to parley with the Danes regarding the release of Aethelflaed, who stuns Uhtred with her decision.

Uhtred keeps Aethelflaed's wish from Alfred, who is determined to pay his daughter's ransom, while Erik has a plan of his own. Uhtred sets out to rescue the princess, yet Alfred still has qualms about his loyalty.
