Worried about the fate of his kingdom, the ailing King Alfred enlists the valiant warrior Uhtred to confront the army of the Viking warlord Bloodhair, who is told by a sibyl that he will defeat Alfred.

After Uhtred commits a grave offense that causes him to fall out with Alfred, he's forced to make off, heading north to his brother, Ragnar. However, on the way, Skade's curse starts taking effect. Meanwhile, Aethelwold seeks to form a coalition to conquer Wessex.

As Aethelflaed takes sanctuary in a nunnery, she sends her maid with letters to Beocca, urging him to send for Uhtred. Meanwhile, in Dunholm, Bloodhair and Aethelwold try to persuade Uhtred to join their coalition against Alfred.

As Haesten wants to exact revenge on Aethelflaed, he goes to Wincelcumb, only to find Uhtred and his men there. After a gory fight, Haesten agrees to exchange Aethelflaed for Skade. Meanwhile, Aethelwold and Cnut plot against Ragnar.

After it was rumored that Alfred's dead, Bloodhair and Cnut head the Danish Army in its march to Wessex. Uhtred learns what happened to Ragnar from Brida, after which he meets Alfred, who refuses to help him attack Haesten; however, Edward comes to his aid.

Edward meets Haesten in battle and defeats him, but the latter manages to escape with Skade. As Uhtred meets Brida, they seek Storri the Sorcerer to help Ragnar find his way to Valhalla.

After Aethelwold's men try to attack Uhtred, he bests them and sends their leader to inform the Danes that he's coming to exact his revenge on them. Aethelwold is held captive in Winchester, while Alfred contemplates how to punish him. Bloodhair meets his fate at the hands of Haesten.

Uhtred learns that his children are in Winchester, where he stealthily goes to get Thyra's blood. As Edward's wedding approaches, Alfred admits that Uhtred's help will become a necessity for Edward. With Beocca's help, Uhtred goes to meet Alfred.

The dying Alfred grants a royal pardon to Uhtred, who promises to stay to make certain that Edward succeeds Alfred as king, yet Aelswith doesn't seem pleased about their reconciliation. As Tidman harasses Thyra, tragedy ensues.

With Uhtred incarcerated, Aethelflaed tries to get him to leave Wessex after Aelswith banished him. As Edward revokes Aelswith's decision and sets Uhtred free, they join forces against the Danes, whom they meet in an epic battle.
