When Dr. Gillespie is called in to consult on the case of a young man called Roy Todwell, he recognizes that Todwell is mentally ill, but the diagnosis is rejected by Todwell's parents. Unable to get the help he needs, Todwell's condition goes downhill and he sets out to kill Dr. Gillespie.

When the hospital forces an ailing Dr. Gillespie to hire an assistant, he tries to sabotage the process by assigning impossible cases to the three candidates, promising to hire whichever manages to solve his case.
As Dr. Leonard B. Gillespie struggles to control an outbreak in the children's ward, a case from his past puts his life on the line as a homicidal maniac breaks out of prison upon learning that his former fiancée intends to marry another, and Dr. Gillespie ends up in the crossfire.
When Dr. Gillespie is forced to choose an assistant between Red and Lee, who are head-to-head in this position, Lee is assigned to cure a girl who gets sick every time she eats sweets, which makes Red torn between assisting Lee or following his dream job.
