The suburban housewife Ruby Richardson feels trapped in her seemingly idealistic life, but when she receives a message from her college boyfriend Billy Johnson, she drops everything and boards a train at Grand Central Station with him.

Billy is shocked when he accidentally finds out that Ruby is married with kids. Ruby tries to make Billy jealous by hooking up with a stranger on the train.

Ruby and Billy get off the train in Chicago, where he withdraws all his money from the bank, while his disgruntled personal assistant, Fiona, tries to track him down.

After they re-board the train, Ruby comes across her new friend Alice whom she met in Chicago, but Alice is actually Fiona. Fiona takes the bag full of cash and jumps off the train.

Ruby and Billy jump off the train to follow Fiona, the three of them end up in a heated confrontation in an abandoned cottage, where Fiona meets a tragic fate. The taxidermist Laurel gives Billy and Ruby a ride to the train station.

Detective Babe Cloud interrogates Laurel about Fiona's death. Billy wants to notify the police about the earlier accident without implicating Ruby. Billy and Ruby get back on the train.

As Ruby and Billy's journey comes to an end, the fate of their relationship lies uncertain, as she goes back to her husband while the police is on Bill's tail.
