Detective Harry Ambrose investigates a car accident that was reported by the passenger, Jamie, who survived, but the driver, Nick Haas, was killed.
As Det. Harry and Det. Vic Soto further investigate Nick's death, they suspect that Jamie is not telling the truth, while the local resident Sonya discovers a freshly dug grave on her property.
Harry questions Jamie's former classmates. When Jamie has disturbing visions of Nick, he seeks Harry's help. But when Harry advises him to undergo a psychological evaluation, he runs away.
As Harry follows Jamie in New York, a former student of Harry's takes him to a medium named Kyle who tells him that Nick is still around him.
It's revealed that Jamie murdered Kyle during a private session. Jamie refuses to confess to being the culprit, and he tries to provoke Harry to pick a fight with him.
As Harry and Sonya start dating, Jamie begins to stalk them. Jamie confesses to killing Kyle to his wife Leela. Jamie drags Harry into a dangerous game.
Harry manages to get a recorded confession to manslaughter from Jamie, but it is ruled as inadmissible. Leela reports Jamie’s confession of Kyle’s murder, and Jamie becomes out of control and kills Harry’s boss.
As Jamie becomes hellbent on making Harry suffer, he kidnaps his grandson, Eli, but he manages to escape. A final showdown between Harry and Jamie takes place, which ends tragically.
