By going camping, Annie and Ryan are able to avoid the Troll's possible fury. However, Annie's discovery that her mom left town for Vancouver and her dad is living alone brings reality crumbling down.

Interviewing the Troll is how Annie launches her independent work career. Fran is devastated to learn that Vic is not exclusive. When no one reads Annie's piece, she realizes that leaving The Thorn may not have been a wise decision as she had imagined.

After working for herself for a month, Annie is beginning to crumble. Ryan goes roller skating with her to meet up with old buddies.

Although Annie has been demoted to the Freak of the Week Column, she is back at The Thorn. In the meantime, she invites Ryan to her parent's house for dinner.

Annie reunites with Fran's brother Lamar while accompanying Fran to her cousin's traditional Nigerian wedding.

Gabe assigns Annie a substantial piece on women in business conventions to write. Gabe leads Annie to a social conclusion despite the fact that she believes it is a method to profit from feminism.

When Annie first meets The Thorn's publisher, she learns through their conversation that she has been underselling herself in both her personal and professional lives.

Ryan and her mother are the two aspects of Annie's life that she eventually resolves. Fran comes to the realization that she is not in need to be dependent on other people.
