Hamd, a young man with an interest in politics returns from Spain. Fearing for his future and wanting to keep him away from politics, Hamd's father considers wedding him off, but Hamd refuses because he's still enamored with the family's maid, Merjana.

Mokhtar quarrels with his elder son and kicks him out. Hamd tells his mother he wants to wed Merjan, and she attends their wedding. While at a cafe with his friends, Hamd is caught and sent to the Attorney General's office who tells him to ditch politics and forget about independence.

Hamd's political views and his dream of independence gets him tortured at the Attorney General's office. As he is eventually released, Hamd's father refuses to talk to him. When Mokhtar falls ill, Hamd and his wife Merjana visit him and Merjana tries to relieve his pain.

Fou'ad and his wife visit Hamd to meet Merjana and get to know her. As Hamd and his friends go to a mountain with a river passing through to retrieve a treasure, Hamd falls into the water and almost drowns. Merjana saves him and is hospitalized, Hamd is grief-stricken.
