As the body of a teenage single mother is found dead in a creek, Detective Mare Sheehan is juggling many issues, from dealing with her ex-husband's engagement, to the reopening of a missing person's case and the 25th anniversary of her high school basketball state championship win.

As county detective Colin Zabel helps Mare with the investigation of Erin's murder, Mare arrests Brianna for assaulting Erin before her murder, while Erin's father takes justice into his own hands.

As Frank denies having anything to do with Erin's murder, new information comes to light regarding the murder. Mare makes a questionable action in order to ensure that Carrie doesn't gain custody of Drew.

After Mare is forced to take administrative leave, Zabel takes charge of the investigation, as he finds out that Deacon had a history of inappropriate conduct with an underaged girl. As another girl goes missing, Dawn finds out that her daughter Katie might still be alive.

As Zabel confides a shocking secret to Mare regarding a previous case, they follow a lead that takes them to the man who kidnapped Katie and Missy, whereupon a fatal shoot-out ensues.

As Mare is assigned back to Erin's murder investigation, Lori tells her a shocking truth about the identity of Erin's killer, while Jess brings new evidence to the police station.

Mare races to the fishing spot to stop John from shooting Billy. Mare looks after Drew as Carrie drops the custody case. When the real murderer is revealed, Mare is left to come to terms with the painful past.
