In the only living colony left on Earth called New Babyl, Aliyah, a candidate in the state's Exemplar entertainment contest, comes across a discovery known as The Archive, after which her life will never be the same again.

Aliyah finds out a link between the Archive and her late mother, while an improvised performance gets on the nerves of those in power.

As Phydra questions Bohdi about his hip-hop-inspired act, Aliyah's fellow Exemplar candidates are led by her in a protest inspired by the civil rights movement in an attempt to free Bohdi.

Aliyah and her friends turn to hip-hop music for inspiration for the Exemplar group's next round, while Tempo stumbles upon humanity's dark history in the Archive.

Aliyah, Apollo, Bohdi, and Brooklyn embark on an adventure to the edge of New Babyl to find out if life exists beyond the shield. As for the Reform sector, Sage and Mags become trapped in a rebellion between the Authority and enraged citizens.

Aaliyah and the Exemplar candidates face a new reality as they try to deal with the consequences of their actions that led to a Tribunal backlash.

Authority Phydra sets out to get rid of people linked to the Archive, while Aliyah sees peculiar visitors coming to New Babyl.

As the Exemplar semi-finals draw nearer, Aliyah discovers a dangerous secret about New Babyl.

Bohdi and Aliyah team up with a secret rebel group in New Babyl, while Phydra pursues a spy at the Tribunal.

Aliyah hatches a plan to expose the truth about New Babyl during the Exemplar finals, but Authority Phydra is tightening her grip on her, as she is willing to do whatever it takes to stop her.
