Mathilde is a poor and unhappy lady. She is married to a simple writer who tries to make her happy. As they are invited to a party, she borrows a diamond necklace from her friend. Unfortunately, she loses it, so she buys another one to return to her friend. She lives miserably because of the cost of the necklace. In the end, she discovers that the necklace she lost was cheap and worth nothing.
