The play takes place in an absurd and emotional setting within a family waiting to meet their absent son every day at nine o'clock, only for him to return to them without feeling like a known son. In the end, the shocking truth is discovered: the returning son is nothing but an actor trained to play the role of the absent son as a fake consolation! Despite this, the mother continues to ask for a substitute to fill her emotional void.
