A German playwright, writer, and poet born in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. He enrolled to study medicine at the University of Munich in 1917. He had started writing poetry and prose in high school. Afterwards, he began attending classes in literature, philosophy, and art history. He worked as a dramaturg in Kammerspiele in Munich from 1923-1924 when he moved to Berlin. He lived in several places including Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and the US. He married twice and had 4 children. His notable works include The Mother (1930), Mr Puntila and his Man Matti (1940), and Mother Courage and Her Children (1941). He is considered to be one of the founders of the Epic theatre movement and was given several honors and accolades including The National Award in Germany in 1951 and the Lenin International Peace Prize in 1954. He died on 14 August 1956 in Berlin, Germany.
