His breakout role came with the TV series “The Streets of San Francisco” (1972-1976) alongside Karl Malden, who became a longtime mentor to Douglas until his death in 2009. In 1979, following a few more film roles, Douglas produced and starred in “The China Syndrome” co-starring Jane Fonda and Jack Lemmon about a nuclear power plant accident. It was considered “one of the most intelligent Hollywood films of the 1970s.” Douglas’ star rose considerably with “Romancing the Stone” (1984), which he produced and starred in with Kathleen Turner. His films in subsequent years cemented Douglas as a leading man: “Fatal Attraction,” “Wall Street,” which earned him an Oscar, “Basic Instinct” with Sharon Stone, “Falling Down” and “The Game.” Critics at this point observed that Douglas’ roles personified the “contemporary, Caucasian middle-to-upper-class American male who finds himself the brunt of female anger because of real or imagined sexual slights.” Critic Rob Edelman described his characters as the “Everyman who must content with, and be victimized by, these women and their raging, psychotic sexuality.” Douglas’ recent endeavors include playing a middle-aged professor coming up against writer’s block in “The Wonder Boys” (2000), Steven Soderbergh’s acclaimed “Traffic” (2000), and the über-flamboyant composer and musician Liberace in HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra” (2013). In September 2013, Douglas won an Emmy for Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for “Behind the Candelabra.” Douglas began dating Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones in 1999; the two were married in 2000. They have two children. Recent gossip mags have claimed the two are separating. A representative for Zeta-Jones confirmed in mid-2013 that they were taking time apart to “evaluate and work on their marriage.”
