Jules Fothman was born on March 5, 1888, in Chicago, Illinois. He began writing films in 1915. He gave up his real name and used the name Stephen Fox in his scenarios when the United States entered World War I because he thought his name sounded German, but he reverted to his real name after the war. He is famous for Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), To Have and Have Not (1944), and Nightmare Alley (1947). He married American actress Sybil Seely. He passed away on September 22, 1966 in Oxford, England, United Kingdom as a result of a severe brain hemorrhage.
