An American actor, director, and writer, born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, United States, as George Orson Welles. He graduated from the Todd School for Boys in Woodstock, Illinois. The first short film he directed, wrote, and starred in was Twelfth Night (1933). He co-founded with John Houseman the Mercury Theatre in 1937. His most notable films include Citizen Kane (1941), Touch of Evil (1958), The Stranger (1946), and The Lady from Shanghai (1947). He first wife was actress Virginia Nicolson, then he married actress Rita Hayworth, and then actress Paola Mori. In 1971, he was awarded an honorary Oscar for his superlative artistry and versatility in the creation of motion pictures. Welles died on October 10, 1985, in Los Angeles, California. |
