He was one of the first Turkish directors to be elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that chose the Oscars in 2016. He got married to the broadcaster Begüm Bagca Tiryaki on September 1, 2020. His works, include: Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, Winter Sleep, and The Butterfly's Dream.
