Salma El-Sharkawy |
An American writer specializing in children's literature, teacher, and poet. He was born in Chester, Pennsylvania, and studied at Clemson University in South Carolina, where he obtained bachelor's and master's degrees in English. HHe teaches poetry and fiction in the English Department at Western Carolina University, where he holds the John and Dorothy Parris Professorship in Appalachian Cultural Studies. He wrote poems and stories in more than a hundred magazines and journals and gained fame as a novelist. He won the Frank O'Connor Award for short stories in 2010. He is also famous for Serena (2014), adapted from his novel of the same name.
