He graduated from the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and worked in theater. He starred in Broadway theaters and worked in films before working on American television. Due to his strong resemblance to the US President John F. Kennedy, he played his role in the movie The Missiles of October (1974). He then made his fame by co-starring in leading roles in Alfred Hitchcock films. He used to play political roles, especially the roles of presidents. He loves horse riding and polo and has won many awards in them. He also owns a restaurant specializing in Italian cuisine.
