American actor, who was born in New York City, New York, USA on March 29, 1908. He married Dunlop Ann Hall and divorced her in 1973. He joined the theater in the thirties with small roles and then joined Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre and got a small role in Citizen Kane (1941), which paved his way to the cinema screen in small roles.
He returned to Broadway theaters to provide roles in shows, such as Hamlet and Macbeth, and participated in films and TV series. He got an Oscar nomination for two films: Picnic (1956) and Murder (1959). During the seventies, his star began to fade due to his suffering from Alzheimer's disease. He was loved by injured American soldiers injured in the Vietnam War. He died on May 18, 1981, in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA from Alzheimer's disease. His most important works include Bus Stop (1956), Anatomy of a Murder (1959), and Fantastic Voyage (1966).
