American actor, who was born in Guthrie Center, Iowa, USA on May 4, 1910. He married Gertrude Durkin (1937-1970) with whom he had two children. When she died, he married Lois Bretherton (1972-1993) and remained with her until his death. His most important works include The...Read more Plainsman (1936), Vivacious Lady (1938), and Charley's Aunt (1941). He grew up on a farm in Valier, Montana, where he learned skills that later helped him perform in Westerns. His family later traveled to Los Angeles, where he fell in love with theater and studied at the Pasadena Playhouse. He then traveled to New York to complete his studies before returning to California to work in some of its small theaters. He appeared in romantic films and musicals as a supporting actor, and in the fifties, he starred as a leading actor in some Western movies. In the late fifties, he retired and engaged in real estate investment, making a fortune that exceeded what he achieved during his work in acting. He died on December 23, 1993, in Monterey, California, USA.
