An American character actor, born as George Francis Hayes in Stannards, New York, USA, on May 7, 1885. He married Olive E. Ireland (1914-1957), who remained with him until her death. George received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. He starred in his beginnings in silent cinema, and is best known for his frequent appearances in B-Westerns as the comic sidekick of cowboy stars like William Boyd, Roy Rogers and John Wayne in the 1930s and 1940s. He was born the third of 7 children to hotelier and oil production manager Clark Hayes. As a young man, he played baseball in high school, ran away from home and worked in a circus, and in 1902 he joined a touring theater company. He also worked in vaudeville as a singer, where he met his actress wife. He retired at the late 1920s, but losing his savings in the stock market crash in 1929 made him return to the screen after the entry of sound until the mid-thirties, when he focused on Westerns. He died of heart disease in Burbank, California, USA, on February 9, 1969, at age 83.
