An American writer specializing in children's literature and screenwriter, born in New York, USA. After completing his studies at Evander Childs High School, he received a scholarship from the New York Art Students League. He also attended the Cooper Union. In addition, he was a member of the US Navy during World War II, when he authored several short tales while stationed in the Pacific on a ship. He went back to New York after the war and pursued his studies at Hunter College, where he focused on English. In 1950, he worked as a teacher at a Bronx high school, which served as the inspiration for his 1954 book Blackboard Jungle, which was adapted into a movie in 1955. Among his writings are High and Low (1963), The Birds (1963), and Fuzz (1972). He died in Weston, Connecticut, USA.
