An American actress, born in New York City, USA. She won an Academy Award in 1938 for Best Supporting Actress for Key Largo (1948), a Primetime Emmy Award in 1957, a Golden Boot Award in 1995, and a star on the Walk of Fame in 1960. She married 3 times and had a child. She is known for Stagecoach (1939), Murder, My Sweet (1944), and Dead End (1937).
She was born as the only daughter of an immigrant father from France and a Belfast-born mother. She started her career at the age of 11 by working in silent cinema. She finished high school in Mamaroneck, completed her studies at Columbia University, and spent 6 months studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
In 1930, she signed a contract with Warner Bros. She appeared on Broadway in 1932 and continued her work in theater and cinema. In 1953, she started working on television. She died on April 8, 2000, in Newport Beach, California, USA, of respiratory illness.
