An English writer and novelist, born in Yorkshire, England. She studied at the London School of Economics and Durham University. She taught history and political science until 1982, then began writing in her third decade. Her first novel, “Union Street,” was published in 1982 and won the Fawcett Society Writers’ Award. Her second novel, “Blow Your House Down,” was adapted into a play in 1994. Her most famous novels are the "Regeneration" series, and the second novel in this trilogy, "The Eye in the Door," published in 1993, won the British newspaper "The Guardian" award for fiction as well as the most prestigious literary award in England, the "Booker Prize," for the novel. The third is entitled "The Ghost Road," published in 1995.
