He graduated from high school in 1950, joined the Air Force but was later discharged due to problems with his back. After returning to Baylor University, Nelson entered for two years but dropped out after two years. Nelson moved to Vancouver, Washington, where he wrote the Family Bible and recorded Lumberjack in 1956. In 1962, he recorded his first album ...And Then I Wrote. As a result of this success, Nelson signed a contract with RCA Records in 1964 and joined the Grand Ole Opry the following year. Nelson is best known for participating in the movies Honeysuckle Rose (1980), Songwriter (1984), and The Big Bounce (2004).
