English-Australian actor, born in South Kensington, London, England, United Kingdom. He went to Zurich and Paris to study. When he arrived in Britain in 1912, he was working as a research chemist. He then joined the Royal Army Ordnance Depot and the Royal Field Artillery during World War I. His primary passion was acting, and he made his stage debut at the Repertory Theatre in the play Caprice towards the end of 1933. Lawrence H. Cecil, a radio drama producer for the Australian Broadcasting Commission, became interested in him and mentored him throughout 1939 and 1940. He is known for A Town Like Alice (1956) and Lost Horizon (1973). He won an Oscar for his role in Network (1976) and a BAFTA Award for Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971). He died on January 14, 1977, in the United States of a heart attack.
