Biography

A Ukrainian actor, born in Uzhhorod, Ukraine, as Istvan Gyergyai. He married actress Magda Kun, and after their separation, he married Roanne Ollafay Threet (1951-1973), with whom he had his only son, and she remained with him until he died. His credits include Spellbound (1945),...Read more In a Lonely Place (1950), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), and Gilda (1946). He studied at the University of Budapest and began his artistic career standing on stage with the Hungarian National Theatre troupe in 1924. By the end of the twenties, he appeared in Hungarian films. In 1934, Steven moved to Britain and soon secured a future on the cinema screen and British radio. In 1941, he appeared in Hollywood, playing the roles of a metropolis, barman, waiter, doctor, and captain. In 1946, he signed a contract with Columbia Pictures, which continued until 1952, and since then until he died, he remained a regular guest on television, including some cinematic appearances. He died on December 26, 1973, in Los Angeles, California, USA.
