He attended Harvard University before joining the Naval Reserve in 1941. He served in WWII and was...Read more awarded several military honors. After the war, he represented the 11th congressional district of Massachusetts from 1947 to 1953. Afterwards, he was elected to the United States Senate and was the Senator of Massachusetts from 1953 to 1960. During that time, he published his Pulitzer Prize-winning book "Profiles in Courage" (1956). In 1960, he ran for president and won against his opponent Richard Nixon. He appeared as himself in the film The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara (2003). He was assassinated on 22 November 1963.
