An Italian astronaut and fighter pilot, born in Milan, Italy. She studied at the Technical University of Munich on an exchange program and at the Higher Institute of Aeronautics and Space in Toulouse, France. She studied engineering at the Russian Mendeleev University of Chemistry and Technology in Moscow. In 2005, she obtained a master's degree in aeronautical and aerospace engineering from the University of Naples Federico II. In 2001, she joined the Italian Air Force and subsequently trained at the U.S. Air Force's Sheppard Air Force Base to become a fighter pilot. After completing her training, she served, beginning in 2006, with the Fighter Aviation Wing at Istrana and the Air Wing at Amendola Airport.
