He was also a heavyweight amateur boxer. He specialized in drama but occasionally branched out into comedy, most notably in Chaplin's The Gold Rush (1925). In the silent era, he played supporting roles, but as sound movies emerged, his roles shrank, and he frequently went uncredited. He is known for A Notorious Affair (1930) and Noah's Ark (1928). His last appearance in a film was in 1942. He died on April 25, 1949, in Van Nuys, California, USA.
