She attended Western Washington University before transferring to Evergreen State College, where she met Corin Tucker and Tobi Vail. She formed the band Excuse 17. She graduated from Evergreen in 1997 and stayed in Olympia, Washington for three years, then moved to Portland, Oregon. She is the writer, actress, and co-developer of the sketch comedy show Portlandia (2011) on IFC TV.
