A British novelist, born on September 19, 1911 in Cornwall, England. He was awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize in Literature. He's best known for his debut novel "Lord of the Flies," which was adapted into the 1963 film of the same title. He studied natural sciences at Oxford for two years before changing his major to English literature. After the end of World War II, where he fought as an officer in the Navy, Golding devoted himself to writing. His other literary works include "Free Fall," "The Inheritors," and "The Scorpion God." Golding won the Booker Prize in 1980 for his novel "Rites of Passage." He died of heart failure on June 19, 1993, at the age of 81.
