A German-English actor, born in Leipzig, Germany, as John Peter Gilmore. He married 3 times and had one child. His most important works include Carry on Columbus (1992), Carry on Up the Khyber (1968), and Carry on Follow That Camel (1967).
Peter Gilmore is best known for portraying the role of Captain James Onedin in 91 episodes of the television series The Onedin Line (1971-1980). He grew up in Nunthorpe, England, and briefly attended the preparatory school for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), then got expelled. When he joined the army, he discovered his singing talent, and following his discharge, he joined a singing group, The George Mitchell Singers, and appeared in a number of musical plays. He later gave up singing and focused on acting. He debuted on the West End stage in 1958. He released one song that achieved great success, “Follow that Girl,” in 1960.
He presented 14 musical plays until 1969. His first television appearance was on BBC Sunday-Night Theatre (1953) and his first cinematic appearance was in A Kid for Two Farthings (1955). His last movie was Carry On Columbus (1992), and his last work was the television movie On Dangerous Ground (1996). He died in London, England, United Kingdom, on February 3, 2013.
