A German-born American actor, director and producer, born as Franz Reichert to an actor-director father and a prima opera singer mother, in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. He began his theatrical career in Germany, but he also worked in London theaters. He immigrated to the United States in 1899 and worked in Broadway theaters. In 1911, he became an American citizen, and in 1915, he was summoned to Hollywood to act and direct films, playing the roles of Nazi officials and the roles of anti-Nazi Germans. His film debut as an actor was The Case of Becky (1915), and his final film was Superman and the Mole-Men (1951). He left cinema in 1926 and returned to the theater, then returned to Hollywood during the advent of sound to direct versions of American films in the German language. He married Ella Reicher (1899-1948), who remained with him until her death. He's known for Dr. Cyclops (1940), King Kong (1933) and Captain America (1944). He died in Playa del Rey, California, USA on January 19, 1965.
