He then got his big break when he became the permanent understudy to star Kirk Douglas, landing small roles in most of Douglas's films. He then embarked on a second career working as a second director and assistant director on television programs and films. He died in Rosarito Beach, Mexico, on October 1, 1985, at the age of 69.
