An American historian and translator, born in Minneapolis, United States. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in French in 1975 and Yale University with a doctorate in French in 1981. She is the founding director of the Center for French and Francophone Studies, the Gilbert, Lewis, and Edward Lerman Professor of French Studies at Duke University, and the Professor of Romantic Literary Studies at Yale University. She introduced a work by Jacqueline Bouvier, Susan Sontag, and Angela Davis about the Paris Years. Trois Américaines à Paris: Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, Susan Sontag, Angela Davis is the title of the French edition of the book. For her efforts, she was recognized with multiple accolades, such as the National Books Critics Circle Award and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
