An American actor, born in New York City, USA as John Penman Whiteford. He married actress Alma Bennett (1954-1958), and she remained with him until her death. His most important works include Romance of the Rockies (1937), Mark of the Spur (1932), and The Fighting Coward (1935). He worked in Western films and played supporting roles in the short films of The Three Stooges, as he made 28 films of them. He worked in several jobs, the last of which was a sailor, before becoming an actor. His first silent film was Walloping Wallace (1924), and his first sound film was Courtin' Wildcats (1929). His last film was The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), and he died in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA on March 31, 1962.
